At the beginning of the semester, my MMM community service goal was to get involved in an event or project where I could contribute to the community, learn new skills, and make a meaningful impact. I wanted to find a way to give back while challenging myself in a dynamic environment.

On September 29th, I performed an 8-hour shift at the Apple Harvest Festival and was asked to complete a variety of tasks to assist in making the event run smoothly. I spent a lot of time traveling up and down the vendor strip, stopping to ask sellers if they needed anything, such as water, food, or a quick break. One vendor even asked me to assist them in managing their line and repeating orders for consumers because their voice was too sore.

I also assisted in the installation of crowd control stanchions, as well as the setup of tables and seating at the start of the day and then dismantling at the end. In addition, I installed parking signs and even served as a crossing guard to help manage the the busy traffic.

The entire experience taught me a lot about what it takes to execute a large event efficiently. I learned how to deal with a lot of tiny but significant matters, as well as how to be assertive in a polite manner to keep everything on course. It was a busy day, but it felt good to know I contributed to everyone's enjoyment of the event.
